About this deal

Part One covers ‘flat’ blocks and pattern adaptation for a wide range of garments for leisurewear, workwear and nightwear. Here’s the first bodice block I drafted to my measurements, using the Close Fitting Bodice block from Aldrich. Winifred was formerly Professor of Clothing Technology at Nottingham Trent University and a practicing fashion designer.

It also demonstrates the cutting of the types of leisurewear which some manufacturers like to cut to the male body shape.New for this edition is the inclusion of colour to help students recognize the different sections of the book and to enhance the garment illustrations? In this fifth edition, the chapter on computer aided design now has full colour illustrations and reflects the growing importance of CAD to the industry and as a part of fashion and design courses. The book provides very thorough instruction on how to take measurements and apply them basic blocks (or slopers) for just about any type of women’s clothing; close and easy-fitting blocks for bodices, jackets, coats, dresses, skirts, trousers, t-shirts and even swimwear.

I'm all for creating and designing your own sewing patterns so that you can get more from your sewing projects and this is why I am trying to make pattern cutting as accessible as possible to everyone. By way of a one to one lesson, Christine took me through the absolute basics of sewing from how to thread "Sylvia" to stitching in various forms. The rest of the book has been updated where necessary: in particular, new blocks for tailored shirts, new details on how to adapt men's blocks for women's wear, and a revision of sizing and labelling information. You don’t need any special equipment but I found having a claculator, set square, French curves and dot and cross paper (from Wimbledon Sewing Centre) really helpful. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

I would like to thank Alec Aldrich, Ann Rodgers and Dawn Stubbs for their help with the earlier editions of this book; James Aldrich for his technical support; Stephen Chalkley for the provision of my CAD system. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of ′flat cutting′ with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. Do let me know if there are any other books that you think I should pick up to review for you all – I can’t promise anything, but I’m always up for a new sewing book!

Instant communication of procedures has become vital to companies designing in the UK but manufacturing overseas. British industry, which is dominated by large manufacturing groups, is not as responsive as its continental competition where small companies have the flexibility to respond. It doesn't cover draping or more complicated cutting but ultimately that's something you learn over time anyway. Her passion for sustainable fashion and the importance of reducing waste resonated throughout the course.Since the first edition was published in 1980, Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear has become established as the standard work on this subject and has proved invaluable as both a textbook for students and a reference source for the practising designer. I guess you don’t really take a measurement of where your apex actually is, so it makes sense to have to adjust that. At the begining of the book it says "A 1cm seam allowance is allowed on the blocks except where stated no seam allowance. It is ideal for someone with some experience of pattern cutting or someone who is very familiar with using sewing patterns but it's also a great book for a beginner to use in collaboration to learning pattern cutting. I think the fact that almost every pattern cutter that I know has a copy of this book speaks for itself!

A number of these who began their careers in the bespoke trade still seek to retain a high quality level with their own label or when developing a range for a manufacturer. Winifred Aldrich covers both woven and stretch fabric pattern cutting techniques so there's something for everyone.
