About this deal

Thompson Brothers have been quietly building a fantastic reputation for both quality and value, and SRV5 fits that reputation well and is Anthony’s new go to whisky. To taste it started with a syrup sweetness which rolled through surprisingly rich polished wooden floors to a sweetly woody finish. Those with a sweet tooth will appreciate the rich toffee and dried fig notes in Jura’s entry-level expression. Picking a region to explore is a good place to start, although there can be a considerable overlap of the styles of whisky among each of the distillers. I’m a big fan of beer and IPA day sprang up quite quickly and quietly, thus clashing with Whisky Squad – nothing should happen on the first Thursday of the month apart from The Squad, this I decree.

To taste it’s thick and syrupy, with red grapes, spicy wood and a chunk of tannin, rolling towards a buttery apple finish. I went along to his show in London this year, at which everyone seemed to know him and he knew almost all of them, and it was rather good. Richard is an especially appropriate candidate for honouring on the bottle as not only has he survived cancer but also removed his rather famous moustache for Movember. It should come as no surprise that the Land Cask is doing better than the Sea Cask in reviews because peat and smoke make it more interesting.

With some seriously smokey notes – think savoury, even meaty – and a little toasted malt, it’s fantastic neat. The distillery turns 15 years old this week and to celebrate they are having an open day on July 3rd with various events during the day, a ceilidh in the evening, a special whisky cask aged beer from the rather good local Arran Brewery, 3 single cask bottlings from 1995 and a generally available special edition bottling, but more about that later. The presentation is as appealing as its taste, and the fact that it’s non-chiller filtered makes it unique and complex. Our award-winning whisky has had plenty of recognition throughout the years, even being named one of the 20 defining whiskies of the past 20 years! A must have in any collection, the Arran 10 Year Old is an elegant expression that perfectly encapsulates the character of the island.

They say it' is one of the best non peated whisky's in its class and that it contains beautiful nutty tones. I used Glenfiddich instead of brandy to ignite the Christmas pud – the fact that I consider Glenfiddich to be cooking whisky when not too long ago it was one of the best whiskies that you could expect someone to have on their shelf has been commented on. Comes in great condition with original box, whilst the scores from the WhiskyFun experts had this beautifully toned malt flying into 90 point plus territory! You’ve been there, someone’s looking at your whisky bottles and out comes that immortal phrase – ‘I don’t know, I’ve tried whisky and they all taste the time to me’.With Christmas approaching, we got in touch our whisky Club Members to ask them to share their recommendations on the best budget whiskies available today. This first set is an introduction to the whisky regions of Scotland and I was quite pleased to see that I’d only tasted two of the provided whiskies before, and one of those was one I very much wanted to try again. The larger release of the St Magnus suggests that it won’t reach the heady heights of the first bottle, but will be a key part of sets of all three bottles in the future, so grabbing one now if you have the Earl Magnus is a no-brainer. Along with sending out the tasting boxes they have a forum on their site for everyone to share their tasting notes, as well as the usual whisky chat, which will hopefully fill in the gap that not necessarily being around others drinking the whiskies leaves – I can’t wave my arms around and mumble about whisky on the internet, so it’s a bonus for everyone.

I deservedly didn’t win that time, the honour going to Nicole Kidman, but my team picked up the accolade at Milroy’s with our sumo wrestler whisky – big and heavy with a slap at the end. Head straight to their page now to find out what incredible deals you could snap up before they're gone! When making an Old Fashioned, you want a whisky with a touch of honeyed sweetness, notes of orange zest and plenty of complexity. It seems they weren’t one-off releases as some of them are still available for a reasonable cost, including this one – one of the only distillery bottlings of Linkwood available (although they are much loved by independents). A cocktail is only as good as its base spirit, and with apple, pear and sweet cinnamon, we reckon this would make the ultimate whisky sour. My friend Mr Utobeer came through for me again, after an unplanned drop-in while wandering around Borough Market with Mondoagogo a few days before Christmas, and added to my bottle of Orkney Dark Island Special Reserve (left until after Christmas so as to be shared with people who love nice beer more than my family).

Age, type of cask and the area of production will all influence the flavour, although you can expect to taste anything from apple, pear, raisins, chocolate, toffee and coffee to bonfire smoke and sea spray. A very interesting flavour which I’m still not sure I’m a massive fan of, but one I will be trying again to make sure.Water nrought out more spice on the nose and more sour fruit to taste, with hints of grapes and some sugary sweetness on the finish. Matured for 22 years in american oak before being recasked for 6 months to finish in 30 year old Gonzalez Byass Matusalem Oloroso sherry butts, this is part of Dalmore’s increasingly silly range of premium whiskies, although very much at the lower end.
