About this deal

If you start being the kind of person you want to be in the future right now, that's the kind of person you will become.

You’re probably familiar with the famous passage from Theodore Roosevelt that stated, “It is not the critic who counts.

And as Hardy’s example shows, systemizing and scheduling are tools that unlock fast, almost effortless growth. I have altered what I'm doing for the better so I believe the goal of the book has been accomplished. In my early 20s, I was wide-eyed, bushy-tailed, and visualizing the woo-woo thanks to the Law of Attraction books. We need to get into the arena and start taking action, rather than remaining stuck in analysis paralysis. His approach to parenting his youngest child is more nuanced than his approach to raising his eldest children.

Related to this, Hardy also describes a narrow view of success, tied deeply with rationality and external material success (success as defined by capitalism) rather than service, purpose, and connection. There was also some interesting “trivia” that I learned through examples of well known people used in the book. I guess because I’ve read a lot of the source works this book was based on, it just feels like the same old stuff I’ve already heard a million times before. With a blend of psychological insights and practical advice, Hardy encourages readers to complete their work, even if imperfect, and to continuously strive towards becoming the best version of themselves. Until the 1990s, it was widely accepted in psychology that a person’s actions and behaviors were determined by their past. But if you’re serious about your growth, you’ll need to treat future self actions as nonnegotiable appointments around which lesser tasks have to make do.

In the book, author Benjamin Hardy argues that everything we do is driven by our view of the future, whether it’s one we’re trying to avoid or one we’re trying to create. When you change your committed vision, your identity immediately changes, which in turn, immediately changes the flow of your thoughts and behaviors. Hope and purpose toward your future is the essential foundation to a meaningful and functional life. Hardy's insights, coupled with his motivational style, were just what I was looking for at this time. I’m fine making mistakes because the mistakes I make now are much more important than the mistakes I made a few years ago.The reader is challenged to discern the manner in which our future self would behave now and then act accordingly. But it’s only by completing imperfectly today that your future self has any hope of completing at a higher standard tomorrow. Be prepared for generous doses Mormon theology (including the lionization of Joseph Smith, a highly problematic figure in the view of many). We've discussed her ideal future self, and that the best way to become her ideal self is to borrow from it to use now. From this vision, work backwards to develop checkpoints and milestones to bring about this future you.

Hardy's insights have prompted me to set intentional (and realistic) goals for 2024 and work towards creating a life that I will genuinely look back on and feel good about.I see it as urging us to create a fantasy in place of the now, a fantasy of the future that – if we believe hard enough – we can will into existence. It encourages you to be bold and specific in your vision of your Future Self, as this can influence your life here and now. Despite the good content, I'm giving this only 4 stars because it is very disappointing that the book contains links to webpages that don't exist. He was referring to the fact that everyone has ideas, but real artists deliver on them or ship them, as he put it.
