About this deal

Part science fiction, part love story, part coming-of-age story, part dystopian, part thriller, Beautiful Shining People is a novel like no other with something for each and every reader. This is a subject that must be at the forefront of most of our minds in these turbulent times, as those in power seem to become crueller and crueller and it can be hard to see any good in the world, until you look closer at the individuals who make up society.

His latest novel is BEAUTIFUL SHINING PEOPLE, a speculative coming-of-age story set in Tokyo that explores how the things that cast us as outsiders can be the very things that draw us together, and examines whether there is an inherent meaning in the world to come, or if we must create our own. Through his first wanderings around Tokyo we become acquainted with a novel world, one where cars drive themselves, drones circle across the sky and robots are around every corner, but one that is built upon the foundations of the past and the present – the neon-lit streets, the temples and shrines. As much as I loved John and Neotnia the character I adored was Guido as there was so much to his past that influenced his present. The relationship between these two was so incredibly selfless it almost made me reconsider the relationships I have with those around me. It's not inevitable someone with a specific gene will get sick, as it might be affected by other genes, lifestyle factors, or pure luck.I loved all the smart lines of wisdom sprinkled throughout this book, from the drunken conversations between the three MCs, to the wonderfully real quotes we got from Joe, to the completely ahead of his age thoughts coming from our MMC. Despite the multi-lingual droids that welcome him to a sometime future Tokyo he is alone and lonely, before finding his way to a small café where he meets Neotnia and everything changes.

John is open where Neotnia can be guarded and as to the reasons for this…well, I wouldn't want to spoil the book.

There are lots of themes covered in this story: relationships, belonging, loneliness, finding the meaning of life, but also there is a darker side to it all. The narrator is John, an a8 year old American coding genius who has come to Tokyo to sell his quantum code apps to Sony for a lot of money. A café run by a disgraced sumo wrestler, where a peculiar dog with a spherical head lives, alongside its owner, enigmatic waitress Neotnia.
