About this deal

When Clovis, Eve and Tom decide to play with a ouija board in an old abandoned house on Halloween, none of them foresees the horrors they’re about to unleash. I didn't feel particularly invested in any of the characters so it was left to the plot to jolly us along, which it did enough for me to finish it. The main narrative delves into the aftermath of one of the family accused of murdering the entire family in this aforementioned, isolated and eery dwelling deep in the woods of England.

Over the years I have conducted many private exorcisms and cleansings, helping home-owners and the ghosts themselves to find peace. The House In The Woods by Zoë Miller will be published October 14th with Hachette Ireland and is described as ‘a gripping edge-of-your-seat novel’. The animal characters are shown in atmospheric woodland and lakeside landscapes depicted in a soft painterly pallet while bolder colours are used in indoor scenes. I thought it was pure genius to tie this in with how her character in a gangland drama series made their untimely end. This is the first book in a new series and I’m happy that once chosen it because I won’t be missing any in the future.

What follows is the investigation from Atticus Priest whom is tasked by the wife of the accused to clear her ‘innocent husband’. Very much a family drama, this is a story of bitter recrimination, revenge and guilt passed down through generations when in the 1960s a shocking incident results in repercussions that are felt for many years to come. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, I liked how we were able to relate to Atticus and his personal problems.I did find it a bit one dimensional at times and especially found the character of Pippa not drawn out enough. The sins of the past have a very long and strong reach right into the present and the author has done a fantastic job of creating a story that will leave you guessing until the last possible minute whilst taking you on a journey of many unexpected twists and turns. That’s when I discovered John Milton, Beatrix and Isabella Rose, and his Other well developed supporting characters. I felt this book was a slow burner, although we learn from the offset that something devastating happened in the past but we were offered no hints as to what that was, so I was kept really intrigued. With the house locked from the inside it looks like an open and shut case of murder suicide, with the son, Cameron the killer.

When actress Evie Lawrence is injured in a hit-and-run accident, she wants nothing more than to retreat to her woodland home in Wicklow to recover.Dawson underpins Atticus’ mode and motivation in such a ephemerally nuanced, deep, non-pretentiously complex whilst humanly relatable method that he is ultimately put simply an incredibly engaging persona that you just cannot move away from. So begins a creepy story in which we see the trio so scared and unsure of what to do that they have to enlist the help of Eve’s Uncle, a great character who luckily knows a lot about the strange and unusual things of the world. Similar grubby office in which he lives without a shower, recent dismissal from a policing related job, complicated past relationship and even a 'disability': where Strike is an amputee, Finch is medicated for Asperger's, Finch's side-kick is not Robin but a former lover, DCI 'Mac' Jones.
