Babes in the Wood Wirt has lost all hope of ever finding the way back home and so, after hearing the sound of The Beast's singing, he decides they should just go to sleep under a tree. The pilot episode aired in film festivals such as LA Shorts Fest and Ottawa in September 2013, and at Austin Film Fest in October 2013. It talks at length about the idea's inception and how it developed, and there are cute anecdotes about working with the designers and voice actors. Commentary provided by series creators Patrick McHale and Nick Cross enhance the experience, as well as quotes from the cast and crew. I think this is one of the most beautifully animated shows I have ever seen, and it was such a treat to completely delve into the gorgeous backgrounds and concept art on show throughout this book.Personally my favorite part isn't seeing the art of the show, its seeing the art of what the show could've been. McHale saw it as "a possible Halloween special", but had trouble adapting the premise with a larger story arc. I adore the show so dearly, and the more I learn about the techniques and ideas behind it, the more I fall in love with its world. McHale abandoned the original idea centered around chapters of a mystical tome and the series' title became Over the Garden Wall. Speaking of that guy, though, many mysteries are from the show surrounding him and his edelwood trees are expanded upon (I won’t talk about them now, of course), which may answer a lot of questions -- like what happened for me -- or create a bunch more -- like what happened for a friend of mine.
